Frank Rödel has worked his way across many archaic landscapes on every continent—from the volcanoes of New Zealand and Hawaii to the Sahara and Arctic, both photographically and in paintings. His photographs represented here, were captured during an expedition made by the Alfred Wegener Institute and documented in his book “Terra Incognita” published by Kerber Verlag: “Rödel’s pictures fascinate the viewer as they merge with almost scientific intensity and their topographical structures hint at their historicity. The artist knows about the limited nature of every momentary experience and therefore seeks to surround them in long series of pictures.” In 2018 / 2019 Frank reached a turning point in his life and began to dedicate himself to pure painting as the result of intensive experiences with nature. For a deeper dive into his process and his work, we take you from here.
